Fines and Property Seizures: Trump’s New Crackdown on Immigration

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump plans to impose a daily fine of $998 on immigrants who have been issued deportation orders but have not left the United States. In addition, their property may be confiscated if the fines are not paid, according to Reuters.

These fines are based on a 1996 law that was first enforced in 2018 during Trump’s first presidential term. The agency cited a U.S. official stating that the penalties will be applied retroactively for up to five years, potentially resulting in fines exceeding $1 million.

The administration is also considering the seizure of property belonging to migrants who fail to pay the fines. Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, stated that undocumented immigrants must use the “CBP One” app to voluntarily deport themselves immediately.

McLaughlin added, “Failure to comply will result in consequences, including a daily fine of $998 for each day the immigrant remains in the U.S. beyond the final deportation order deadline.”

These measures are part of Trump’s intensified crackdown on immigration since taking office in January.

The fines are expected to target around 1.4 million migrants who have received deportation orders from immigration judges.
