First Official Syrian Statement on the Dismissal of Government Employees
Syrian Minister of Finance Mohammad Abazid revealed that a review of state employee records found 400,000 ghost employees out of a total of 1.3 million. These individuals have been receiving salaries without actually performing any work, and he emphasized that correcting this issue would help conserve resources.
Abazid explained that the reforms aim to simplify the tax system and remove obstacles for investors, including granting amnesty for fines, in order to stimulate economic activity and attract investments to Syria.
He also noted that some state-owned enterprises, which have been found to exist solely for resource exploitation, will be shut down as part of financial and administrative reform efforts.
In a related development, several Syrian provinces have witnessed protests and sit-ins by dismissed employees demanding a review of the termination decisions, asserting that they were unfairly removed during the government’s record review process.
