France and Britain Coordinate Their Nuclear Capabilities for the First Time in Their Defense Relations
France and Britain announced, in an unprecedented development in their defense relations, their readiness to coordinate their nuclear deterrence capabilities in response to what they described as “extreme threats” that may affect Europe. Both parties confirmed in a joint statement that nuclear deterrence will remain independent in terms of each country’s sovereign decision, but coordination is possible when needed, without disclosing the nature of the response or operational details.
French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are scheduled to sign an official declaration establishing a “Nuclear Oversight Group,” chaired by the Élysée Palace and the British Prime Minister’s office, to coordinate military, political, and technical cooperation between the two countries. The agreement also includes deepening collaboration in developing long-range missiles such as Storm Shadow/SCALP and working on future defense systems relying on artificial intelligence and advanced technologies.
The British government confirmed that nuclear cooperation between France and Britain will remain open to coordinated actions, emphasizing that any threat to the vital interests of either country could be met with the nuclear deterrence strength of both. On July 10, the 37th Franco-British Summit is scheduled to take place at Northwood base near London, followed by a joint press conference, coinciding with a virtual meeting of the Ukraine Support Coalition.
