From Baghdad: Iraq and Syria Announce Security Coordination to Address Shared Threats

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein and Syrian Foreign Minister Assad al-Shaibani, during their meeting in Baghdad on Friday, affirmed that the shared security threats require close cooperation between the two countries, emphasizing the importance of coordination to eliminate ISIS, particularly in border areas. They also discussed the possibility of forming a joint operations room to address the movements of the organization.

Iraqi Minister Fouad Hussein explained that Syrian society, like Iraq, suffered from the policies of the Ba’ath Party and was in a continuous struggle to rid itself of the totalitarian regime, pointing out that instability in Syria directly affects the situation in Iraq, and that Iraq’s experience in confronting security challenges could be beneficial for Syrians.

For his part, Syrian Minister al-Shaibani affirmed his country’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with Iraq, which would positively reflect on the stability of both countries and the region, stressing that Damascus would stand firm against any foreign interventions.
