German Chancellor Urges Trump to Maintain Support for Ukraine, Warns Against Easing Pressure on Russia
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called on the U.S. administration and former President Donald Trump to continue supporting Ukraine, stressing the importance of Western unity in addressing ongoing geopolitical challenges, particularly the conflict in Ukraine.
Speaking at the Ukraine Recovery Conference held in Rome, Merz delivered a direct message to Washington, stating:
“Stay with us. We Europeans are moving on the same wave, and we look forward to a stable political order in this world.”
He emphasized that Western support for Kyiv should remain unwavering, adding that the message to Russian President Vladimir Putin is clear: “We will not back down.”
Criticism of Slovakia Over Delay in Sanctions Package
In a related development, Chancellor Merz criticized Slovakia for blocking the adoption of the European Union’s latest sanctions package against Moscow. He noted that the proposal has near-unanimous backing among EU member states, with only one country yet to approve.
“I call on Slovakia and its Prime Minister to urgently reconsider this position,” Merz stated, highlighting the need for European unity during what he described as a critical phase.
He further affirmed that the EU’s stance on the conflict in Ukraine remains firm and that continued cooperation with the United States is essential to maintaining regional and global stability.
