German Chancellor Friedrich Merz acknowledged that Germany is experiencing one of the most challenging periods in its modern economic history, noting that the entire Western community faces a significant test. He added that these conditions directly impact Germany’s export-oriented economy.

Merz called for broad and swift reforms, emphasizing that the goal is to generate the resources needed for infrastructure, ensure social solidarity, and preserve the welfare state, denying that the reforms aim to dismantle the social system.

Responding to criticism, Merz rejected opposition claims that his government is unsympathetic to citizens or seeks to undermine the welfare state.
