Haaland in the Champions League: 61 Goals in 60 Games as Messi and Ronaldo Records Fall

Haaland in the Champions League has reached another extraordinary milestone, scoring 61 goals in just 60 appearances and becoming the fastest player in competition history to reach the 60-goal mark.
The Manchester City striker scored twice against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, reaching 60 and then 61 Champions League goals during the same match despite City’s 4-2 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.
Haaland in the Champions League: fastest ever to 60 goals
UEFA statistics show that Haaland required only 60 appearances to reach 60 Champions League goals.
Lionel Messi needed 80 matches to reach the same milestone, while Robert Lewandowski took 85, Kylian Mbappe 89 and Cristiano Ronaldo 98.
Haaland therefore reached 60 Champions League goals 20 appearances faster than Messi and 38 faster than Ronaldo.
Why does Haaland now have 61 goals?
The Norwegian entered the Paris Saint-Germain match with 59 Champions League goals.
His two goals during the game first took him to the historic 60-goal milestone and then lifted his overall total to 61.
That is why the record refers to him being the fastest player to reach 60 goals, while his current total stands at 61 in 60 games.
Sixty-one goals across three clubs
Haaland began his remarkable Champions League scoring record with Salzburg, scoring eight times in six appearances.
He then produced 15 goals in 13 matches for Borussia Dortmund.
Since joining Manchester City, he has scored 38 Champions League goals in 41 appearances.
His overall record therefore stands at 61 goals from 60 matches, better than one goal per appearance.
Haaland is already seventh on the all-time list
At only 26 years old, Haaland is already seventh among the Champions League’s all-time leading scorers, according to UEFA.
His age and scoring rate mean he still has considerable time to move significantly higher if he continues playing regularly in the competition.
A record-breaking path from 20 to 60 goals
The 60-goal milestone is only the latest in a series of Champions League records.
Haaland was the quickest player to reach 20 goals, doing so in 14 games, then 30 in 25, 40 in 35, 50 in 49 and 60 in exactly 60 appearances.
He also became the youngest player to reach several of those landmarks, including 60 goals at 26 years and 85 days.
Messi’s 70-goal record is the next target
Lionel Messi holds the record for the fewest appearances needed to reach 70 Champions League goals, hitting the mark in his 90th match.
With 61 goals after only 60 appearances, Haaland has significant room to reach the next milestone faster.
Kylian Mbappe currently holds the record for being the youngest player to reach 70.
A historic individual night despite City’s defeat
Haaland’s record arrived during a difficult night for Manchester City.
Paris Saint-Germain raced into a commanding lead before Haaland’s two goals gave City hope, but the defending champions eventually won 4-2.
The defeat was Enzo Maresca’s first as Manchester City manager, while Haaland’s brace provided the main positive from City’s evening.
Can Haaland eventually challenge Ronaldo?
Haaland’s scoring pace inevitably invites comparisons with the competition’s greatest scorers.
But reaching the highest career totals achieved by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will require not only a high scoring rate but many years of sustained Champions League participation.
What makes Haaland’s current position extraordinary is the speed at which he is climbing the historical rankings.
