Iran threatens: Targeting our nuclear facilities means destroying similar facilities of yours

Iran warned that it would respond in kind to any attack targeting its infrastructure or nuclear facilities. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Tehran would direct proportional responses against similar facilities in any country allowing its territory to be used to launch attacks on Iran.

Gharibabadi affirmed that targeting nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards violates international law and the UN Charter, noting that several attacks have targeted the Bushehr nuclear plant, the yellowcake production facility, the heavy water plant in Arak, as well as attacks on Natanz and Fordow.

He stressed that attacking these facilities threatens international peace and security, and that it is the Security Council’s duty to seriously examine these issues and prevent such acts.

Regarding the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the Iranian official affirmed that Tehran has always adhered to it, but noted internal criticism in Iran about why it continues to uphold the treaty given the IAEA’s inability to protect Iranian nuclear facilities. He added that a plan to withdraw from the treaty has been proposed in the Islamic Consultative Assembly.
