Escalating Iranian attacks on Kuwait and US-Iran accusations

Iranian attacks on Kuwait: Damage to Kuwait International Airport after missile and drone strikes, the third attack in less than a week

Kuwait International Airport was attacked by missiles and drones in the early hours of Wednesday, causing casualties and injuries and damaging civilian and vital facilities, a security development that prompted Kuwaiti authorities to activate emergency plans and temporarily suspend air traffic, amid escalating regional tension and continued exchange of accusations between Washington and Tehran regarding recent attacks in the region.

Flight suspension and emergency activation

The Kuwaiti Civil Aviation Authority announced that the passenger terminal at Kuwait International Airport was attacked by drones and missiles, confirming damage to a number of airport facilities and the immediate activation of the emergency plan. The authority explained that authorities decided to suspend all flights and divert some to alternative airports until further notice, as a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring the safety of travelers and workers.

In a later development, the authority announced the resumption of all Kuwait Airways flights via passenger terminal T4 only.

In the same context, the Kuwaiti Army said it is monitoring developments in coordination with the relevant authorities, confirming that it is taking necessary measures to maintain the country’s security and deal with field developments.

Human toll and damage

For its part, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed its condemnation of the ongoing Iranian attacks with ballistic missiles and drones that targeted civilian facilities on Wednesday dawn. It explained that the attack on Kuwait International Airport resulted in one death and injuries to others, and also caused damage to a number of vital facilities, including diplomatic missions.

The ministry added that the repetition of these attacks represents a dangerous escalation and threatens the security and stability of the country, affirming that Kuwait will not be lenient in dealing with any aggression targeting its territory or civilian facilities.

Two conflicting narratives

In parallel, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it had confronted a wave of Iranian attacks targeting a number of countries in the region, affirming that the ballistic missiles and drones launched did not succeed in hitting their targets.

The US Command explained that it carried out what it described as precise strikes targeting a military ground control station on Qeshm Island, considering that this step came in response to the attacks attributed to Iran.

According to CENTCOM, two missiles launched toward Kuwait fell or disintegrated before reaching their targets, while US and Bahraini air defenses intercepted three other missiles heading toward Bahrain. It also announced the downing of three suicide drones that it said were targeting civilian sailors while transiting territorial waters.

The US Command added in a later statement that an additional wave of drones tried to target its forces in Kuwait, but air defense systems managed to intercept them without human losses or material damage.

Iranian response

In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that it had carried out attacks targeting what it described as a US base in the region, as well as the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, in response to what it said was a US targeting of Iranian facilities and interests.

The Revolutionary Guard indicated that the United States targeted an Iranian oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz, causing damage to the engine room, and also announced the targeting of a ship it said was linked to US and Israeli interests in response to that incident.

In its statement, the Revolutionary Guard warned of the repercussions of any steps that might affect the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, affirming that the Iranian response will continue if what it described as attacks on Iranian interests continue.

State of alert in Kuwait and Bahrain

For its part, the Kuwaiti Army announced that its air defenses had confronted attacks with missiles and drones, without identifying the party responsible for them. It also reported that the sounds of explosions heard in the country were the result of interception operations of aerial targets.

The Kuwaiti Ministry of Defense called on citizens and residents not to approach any debris or unknown objects that may have resulted from the interception operations.

In Bahrain, the Ministry of Interior announced the sounding of sirens and called on residents to follow security instructions and go to safe places, while local media reported the interception of missiles and drones in the kingdom’s airspace.

Third targeting within a week

This development comes at a time when Kuwait is witnessing a series of temporally close security incidents, as this is the third targeting in less than a week, after Kuwaiti authorities announced on two previous occasions confronting attacks with what they described as hostile missiles and drones.

The Kuwaiti Cabinet had renewed its condemnation of the attacks that targeted the country in recent days, demanding their immediate cessation, and holding Iran responsible for them, while affirming Kuwait’s right to take whatever measures it deems appropriate to protect its security.

Several Arab countries, including Gulf Cooperation Council states, also expressed their rejection of the continued attacks on Kuwait, considering that they represent an escalation that would undermine efforts to reduce tension in the region.
