Israel Recognizes Somaliland as a Sovereign State, Triggering Regional and International Condemnation
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Friday that Israel recognizes Somaliland as a sovereign and independent state, marking a historic and controversial diplomatic move with wide regional implications.
Netanyahu, alongside Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, signed a mutual declaration of recognition, officially establishing relations between the two sides.
Israel–Somaliland Cooperation Plans
Netanyahu stated that Israel intends to immediately expand relations with Somaliland, focusing on cooperation in agriculture, healthcare, technology, and economic development. He praised Somaliland’s leadership for its commitment to regional stability and peace, and formally invited President Abdullahi to visit Israel.
For his part, the Somaliland president thanked Netanyahu for the recognition and expressed appreciation for Israel’s role in combating terrorism and promoting regional stability.
Netanyahu also acknowledged the role of Israel’s security and intelligence establishment, thanking Foreign Minister Sa’ar and Mossad, as well as its director David Barnea, for contributing to what he described as a strategic diplomatic achievement.
Israel Recognizes Somaliland.. Why Somaliland Matters
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in the early 1990s following the collapse of the Somali central government. Despite maintaining its own institutions, elections, and relative stability, Somaliland has not been formally recognized by most countries.
Israel’s move makes it the first country to officially recognize Somaliland, granting it a new partner overlooking the strategically vital Red Sea corridor, a region of increasing geopolitical competition.

According to Bloomberg, the announcement comes ahead of Netanyahu’s scheduled talks on December 29 with U.S. President Donald Trump at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. The discussions are expected to focus on the fragile ceasefire in Gaza and broader efforts to stabilize the Middle East.

Somalia
Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned what it described as a “deliberate attack on Somalia’s sovereignty”, warning that the move threatens regional peace and stability. The ministry said the recognition undermines international law and exacerbates political and security tensions.
Saudi Arabia
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed the Kingdom’s full support for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, rejecting Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an illegal unilateral separatist action that violates international law.
Arab League
Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit condemned Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, describing it as a clear violation of international law and the principle of state sovereignty, which forms a cornerstone of the United Nations Charter.
He characterized the move as an Israeli assault on the sovereignty of an Arab and African state, warning that it could destabilize the Horn of Africa through cooperation with third parties outside international legal frameworks.
Gulf Cooperation Council
The Gulf Cooperation Council also denounced the decision, calling it a dangerous تجاوز of international legal principles and a threat to regional stability.
Egypt, Turkey, and Djibouti
Egypt’s Foreign Ministry stated that Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held phone calls with his counterparts from Somalia, Turkey, and Djibouti to discuss what they described as serious and alarming developments in the Horn of Africa.
The ministers reaffirmed full support for Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, rejecting any unilateral actions that undermine Somali sovereignty or create parallel entities. They warned that recognizing secessionist regions constitutes a dangerous precedent, threatens international peace and security, and violates established principles of international law and the UN Charter.
