Israeli Media Highlights Tel Aviv’s Demands in Iran Talks
Israeli public broadcaster reported that the Prime Minister’s office distributed messages to ministers and senior officials ahead of today’s political-security cabinet session and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s upcoming trip to Washington, emphasizing that Israel sees Iran’s commitments as unreliable.
According to the broadcaster, the messages stressed that any negotiations with Tehran should not be limited to preventing it from acquiring nuclear weapons, but must also include restrictions on its ballistic missile program and a halt to support for what Israel describes as the “regional axis of terrorism.”
The broadcaster quoted the messages as saying, “The Iranian regime has repeatedly proven that its promises cannot be trusted,” noting that any violation of Israeli sovereignty or threats to its citizens would be met with a firm response. The messages added that “any such attempt will be confronted strongly and decisively,” signaling Israel’s position on potential escalation.
The Prime Minister’s office also reported that Netanyahu will meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington next Wednesday to discuss the Iran talks, during a visit that was moved up. This follows an indirect round of talks on Friday in Oman between a U.S. delegation including envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and representatives of Tehran.
Prior to those talks, Netanyahu held an extended closed-door security meeting with Witkoff in Jerusalem lasting three and a half hours to define Israel’s so-called “red lines” before any potential agreement.
According to the Israeli broadcaster, the distributed messages stated that “the Americans are extremely naive, especially envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, and they are misleading President Donald Trump,” which, the report says, has heightened Israel’s concern over rapidly advancing potential international understandings with Iran that it fears may be incomplete and fail to meet its security needs.
