Japan: Liberal Party Chooses Sanae Takaichi to Lead Government for the First Time

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party in Japan elected Sanae Takaichi as party leader on Saturday, paving the way for her potential to become the first woman to hold the office of Prime Minister in the country’s history. Takaichi defeated four other candidates out of five, according to Japan’s public broadcaster NHK.

The selection of the Prime Minister will be determined through a parliamentary vote, with both the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors deciding who will assume the position. If Takaichi succeeds, she will be the first woman to hold the office in Japan, marking a significant step in Japanese politics and reflecting ongoing changes in the national political landscape.

Sanae Takaichi entered politics in 1993 after winning an independent seat in the House of Representatives and joined the Liberal Democratic Party in 1996. She has held several important ministerial positions, including Minister of State for Okinawa and Northern Territories, Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications for nearly four years, and later Minister of Economic Security, gaining extensive experience in managing critical government portfolios.
