Lebanese Government Preparing to Appoint Ambassador to Syria
Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raji announced that Lebanon will soon appoint a new ambassador to Syria, pledging that the move will be completed in the coming weeks.
He explained that this step is part of a broader plan to complete diplomatic appointments that have been stalled for years, affirming that there is consensus within the Lebanese government regarding cooperation with Syria, and that the appointments are now nearly finalized.
Raji noted that the appointment of ambassadors in Lebanon is subject to a complex process requiring the approval of two-thirds of the Cabinet, which has contributed to delays in recent years. However, the current government is working to overcome these obstacles and expedite the appointment process.
The minister also stressed that Syria’s stability directly affects Lebanon’s stability, emphasizing his country’s desire to see a strong Syrian state capable of resolving its internal issues without interference in Lebanese affairs or influence from Lebanese actors on the situation in Syria.
He explained that Lebanon seeks relations based on mutual respect, considering the shared interests between the two countries. He expressed optimism regarding the new system in Syria and noted that Beirut has received clear assurances from Damascus regarding respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty and non-interference in its internal matters.
Raji added that it is essential to address outstanding issues between the two countries, such as border concerns and the fate of missing Lebanese citizens. He stressed the importance of Lebanon-Syria cooperation in dealing with displacement and smuggling issues to ensure a relationship based on equality and mutual respect.
