Lebanese Health Ministry: Targeting Ambulances Violates the Geneva Conventions Mandating Protection of Medical Personnel and Facilities

The Lebanese Health Ministry rejected Israeli allegations claiming that the Lebanese side has used the ambulance system for military purposes, considering such claims as an attempt to justify Israeli airstrikes. The ministry stated in an official release that targeting ambulances by the Israeli army constitutes a violation of international law and the Geneva Conventions.

The statement highlighted that international agreements and the Geneva Conventions stipulate “the protection and respect of medical personnel tasked with searching for, treating, and assisting the wounded and sick,” in addition to “protecting medical units and facilities from being targeted.” The Lebanese position came in response to statements by the Israeli army spokesperson.

The Israeli army spokesperson issued a warning claiming that “Hezbollah is using ambulances extensively for military purposes as part of its operations.”

The spokesperson added: “We warn that military use of medical facilities and ambulances must stop immediately,” emphasizing that “if this approach continues, Israel will act in accordance with international law against any military activity by Hezbollah using these facilities and ambulances.”
