Lebanese Parliament Discusses 2026 Budget Amid Lebanon’s Eurobond Default
Protesters held a sit-in today, Thursday, in front of the Lebanese Parliament, opposing the approval of the 2026 general budget for the third consecutive day, demanding the government adjust wages in line with purchasing power.
The Parliament continues debating the budget, following sessions that began the day before yesterday, Tuesday, with morning and evening sittings, and continued yesterday, Wednesday, with morning and evening sessions. The discussions are set to conclude with an evening session today. Several lawmakers took part in the debates, with most criticizing low investment spending, the absence of a reform-oriented economic vision, and the lack of clear measures to manage public debt amid Lebanon’s default on Eurobonds.
Some lawmakers praised the budget’s approval within constitutional deadlines and the balance between revenues and expenditures, while others pointed to the state’s absence in regions of northern and eastern Lebanon, noting shortcomings in protecting sovereignty. Certain interventions also included criticisms of the recent speech by Hezbollah Deputy Secretary-General Naim Qassem.
