Lebanon-Israel Agreement Extended 3 Weeks.. Trump: Looking Forward to Hosting Netanyahu and Aoun in Washington
US President Donald Trump announced the extension of the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon for three weeks, and said he “looks forward” to hosting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in Washington in the near future.
Trump added that the United States will directly support Lebanon to enable it to protect itself from Hezbollah, calling on Iran to cut funding to the party, and stressing that Israel must defend itself if targeted by missiles, but “cautiously.”
Trump considered that the peace file in Lebanon is “relatively easy” compared to others, and that Hezbollah represents a “common problem” for both Lebanon and Israel.
Meanwhile, the US Vice President described the extension as a “major historic moment for the world,” noting that the direct meeting between Israeli and Lebanese leaders in the Oval Office happened for the first time thanks to Trump’s efforts. The Secretary of State affirmed that the extension provides an opportunity to work toward lasting peace.
