Lebanon Israel Talks: Berri Calls for Upholding Resolution 1701

Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri linked any positive stance toward negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, or President Jouf Aoun’s initiative, to the fulfillment of two key conditions: a comprehensive and sustainable ceasefire and a safe and dignified return of displaced persons.

Berri stated that he refuses to engage in the details of any negotiations before a ceasefire is firmly established, emphasizing that he does not support direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel while the conflict continues.

He added that the priority is to consolidate the ceasefire and adhere to the “mechanism” and UN Security Council Resolution 1701 as the framework for ending the escalation.

In a regional context, the Israeli Army Radio reported that Ron Dermer, envoy of the Israeli Prime Minister, conducted an unannounced visit to Saudi Arabia to discuss a potential settlement with Lebanon. According to reports, the proposal includes transforming Hezbollah into a disarmed political movement as part of a broader settlement between the parties.
