Lebanon: Parliament MPs respond to Hezbollah’s refusal to hand over weapons
MP Georges Aqees from the “Forces” party stated that any decision to disarm Hezbollah would affect the security of all Lebanese citizens. He added that the government tasked the Lebanese Army with preparing a plan to implement the ceasefire decision, which had been negotiated by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri on November 27, 2024, and subsequently approved by the government of Prime Minister Najib Mikati, including ministers from Hezbollah and Amal.
MP Ashraf Rifi warned against any new threats from Hezbollah, stressing that any escalation could have national consequences. He emphasized that the only solution lies in preserving the state and its institutions, without imposing any position by force on Lebanon’s various communities.
Hezbollah Secretary-General, Naim Qassem, had previously warned that any government decision to disarm the party could lead to civil strife, stating that attempts to restrict Hezbollah’s weapons could trigger widespread security and social tensions across the country.
