Lebanon: MPs Threaten Judicial Action Against Hezbollah Secretary-General
In Lebanon, several MPs and political figures have signaled potential judicial escalation in the case filed against Hezbollah Secretary-General Naeem Qassem, criticizing what they described as delays by the judiciary in processing the complaint. The MPs—Ashraf Rifi, Elias Khoury, George Aqeis, Kamil Chamoun—along with former MP Eddie Abi Lamaa and the head of the Change Movement, lawyer Elie Mahfoud, submitted a criminal complaint to the Public Prosecution of the Court of Cassation on August 27, 2025.
The complainants stated that during a meeting with the Cassation Public Prosecutor, Judge Jamal Al-Hajjar, they presented the reasons and circumstances of the complaint along with the relevant legal provisions. However, the file remains pending in the judge’s office without referral to the judicial police for investigation. The group emphasized that no action has been taken despite the passage of more than 21 days and stressed that their initiative aligns with the principles of state logic and the functioning of judicial institutions.
The group also announced plans to follow up on the complaint, including additional inquiries with the Cassation Public Prosecutor’s office and higher judicial authorities, such as the Minister of Justice and the President of the Supreme Judicial Council. They warned that if delays persist, they will consider pursuing the case through any available judicial channels. The statement emphasized the commitment to proceed with the complaint and uphold the law, while keeping the Lebanese public informed of developments and future judicial and political actions.
