Lebanon Summons Iranian Ambassador Over Recent Remarks
Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raji summoned Iranian Ambassador Mojtaba Amani to protest his recent statements criticizing Lebanon’s internal discussions on disarming Hezbollah and placing all weapons under the control of the Lebanese state. Amani had described such discussions as a “conspiracy against nations.”
Sources at the Foreign Ministry confirmed that Raji summoned the ambassador to convey Lebanon’s official rejection of his statements, which were deemed a direct interference in Lebanese internal affairs.
This move marks a rare precedent in the history of the ministry and was triggered by a post published by the ambassador on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
The Ambassador’s Post:
In his post, the Iranian ambassador wrote that disarmament projects are a clear conspiracy against nations, criticizing U.S. policies that support arming Israel while pressuring other countries to reduce their military arsenals.
He added that countries that yield to such pressure become vulnerable to attack, citing the examples of Iraq, Libya, and Syria.
Amani stressed the importance of preserving deterrence capabilities as a first line of defense for sovereignty and independence, warning against falling into conspiracies targeting the security of the region’s peoples.
The Lebanese Arms Issue:
Although Amani did not explicitly mention Lebanon, his statements sparked wide debate, especially amid increasing Lebanese discussions about addressing Hezbollah’s arms and placing them under state authority.
President Joseph Aoun is currently engaging in dialogue with Hezbollah on this issue, affirming that the decision to centralize weapons under the state has been made, although the conditions for its implementation are not yet ripe.
