Maronite Patriarch in Lebanon: We Are in a Time of Negotiation and Diplomacy

The Maronite Patriarch in Lebanon, Mar Bechara Boutros Al-Rahi, dismissed the possibility of a new war, citing U.S. support for Israel. His remarks came during a meeting with President Joseph Aoun at Baabda Palace, emphasizing that Lebanon is currently in a period of negotiation and diplomacy. He also noted that the Pope’s visit contributed to the “dawn of peace.”

Patriarch Al-Rahi described the start of the negotiation process as a “positive sign” and praised the appointment of Ambassador Simon Karam as head of the Lebanese negotiation delegation, considering him well-qualified to manage the file with precision. He added that the current focus is on peace, noting that the era of wars and conflicts has ended and been replaced by a period of negotiation.

The Patriarch stressed the strength of his relationship with the President, stating: “President Aoun is above everyone, even above the Patriarch, and there is no gap between us.” He emphasized that the goal is to promote national peace and stability following the recent papal visit and to advance the negotiation process responsibly and in a coordinated manner.
