UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk warned that the Middle East conflict possesses an “unprecedented force” that could drag countries from various parts of the world into its vortex and ignite new crises at national, regional, and global levels.
During an emergency session of the Human Rights Council, Türk described the situation as “extremely dangerous and unpredictable,” affirming that targeting civilian infrastructure is a violation of international humanitarian law, and that strikes against nuclear facilities amount to “gambling with a catastrophe we will not be able to control.”
The High Commissioner pointed to the serious repercussions of the conflict on regional countries, including Iraq, Syria, and the Palestinian territories, expressing concern over the rising civilian casualties and the wide-ranging economic consequences.
Türk urged influential states to do everything in their power to halt the conflict, warning of sharply rising insurance premiums and marine fuel costs. The UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia estimates economic losses in the Arab region at approximately $63 billion so far.
