Germany Rejects Military Involvement in the Strait of Hormuz and Calls for Negotiation with Iran

German Foreign Minister Johan Fadewol called for Iran’s inclusion in talks regarding the safeguarding of maritime freedom in the Strait of Hormuz. In an interview with ARD, Fadewol stated that the only way to ensure safe navigation in the region is through diplomatic negotiations, emphasizing, “We will not be able to ensure safety in the Strait of Hormuz except through negotiations with the Iranians.”

Fadewol ruled out any German involvement in a military operation to protect maritime freedom, stressing that the federal government rejects engagement in the conflict. He added, “We will not take part in this conflict. This is a clear position from both Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Chancellor Friedrich Merz.”

At the same time, Fadewol pointed out that the German government remains in constant contact with the United States and Israel about their actions regarding Iran. He added, “We will be involved in the process once the military operations against Iran are over.”

Earlier, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius rejected the idea of launching a European military operation to protect navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Chancellor Friedrich Merz also stated that there is currently no reason to consider military protection for the maritime corridors, as Germany is not participating in the current conflict.
