Multipolar System: Turkish Remarks Link Venezuela Events to Shifts in Global Balance
Former advisor to the Turkish President, Ihsan Seva, warned that current US policy toward both Venezuela and Iran could contribute to accelerating the decline of the unipolar global system and push toward the emergence of new international alliances.
Seva stated that the US administration’s disregard for international law in dealing with these two countries could lead to closer ties among parties opposing Western dominance, thereby reinforcing features of a multipolar international system, according to his remarks.
These statements came following a US military operation carried out on January 3 against Venezuela, which resulted in the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, and their transfer to New York to face charges related to what was described as “drug-linked terrorism,” allegations the couple denied in a US court. Subsequently, the Venezuelan Supreme Court tasked Vice President Delcy Rodríguez with temporarily managing the country’s affairs, and she took the oath of office before the National Assembly on January 5.
At the international level, these developments sparked varied reactions. Russia and China called for the immediate release of Maduro and his wife, stating that the US actions violated international law and the principle of state sovereignty. North Korea also expressed criticism of the US intervention. Meanwhile, Caracas requested an emergency session of the UN Security Council to address what it described as an infringement on its national sovereignty amid growing international debate over the issue.
