Nabih Berri Reveals Two Issues Discussed by Ortagus in Lebanon

Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri revealed on Tuesday that US envoy Morgan Ortagus discussed two main issues during her recent visit to Lebanon.

Berri indicated that Ortagus first addressed Israeli claims regarding the continued flow of arms from Syria, which Berri described as false, emphasizing the United States’ ability to monitor the skies via satellites. The second issue concerned negotiations, with Berri confirming the existence of the “Mechanism,” a committee comprising civilian and military experts to monitor obligations between Lebanon and Israel, similar to arrangements made during the demarcation of the Blue Line and maritime borders, aimed at reinforcing stability and preventing escalation.

The “Mechanism” or Five-Party Committee consists of UNIFIL, Lebanon, Israel, France, and the United States, and is chaired by a US general. The committee monitors compliance and implements the ceasefire agreement that entered into force on 27 November 2024. Berri also confirmed that the Lebanese Army is deployed in the southern Litani region with over 9,000 personnel, noting that the ongoing Israeli presence in large parts of southern Lebanon hinders full deployment, according to periodic UNIFIL reports.
