Netanyahu: Al-Sharaa’s Position After Assad’s Fall Opens a Path to Peace With Israel

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa had opened a communication channel with Tel Aviv, calling it an opportunity to achieve peace in the region. He added that Syrians “would lose if they return to conflict, and gain if they move toward peace,” emphasizing that the shift in the security situation following the collapse of the Assad regime had enabled this opening.

Netanyahu’s statements came during his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday evening, amid reports of a potential new security agreement between Israel and Damascus. He stated that “Iran used to control Syria in practice, but that has now changed,” pointing to a significant decline in Iranian influence.

For his part, U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that he had decided to lift sanctions on Syria, based on a request from Netanyahu and several Middle Eastern countries. “We lifted the sanctions because we wanted to give Syria a chance, after it had no real opportunity to move forward under those restrictions,” he said.
