Normalization with Israel: U.S. Congressman Reveals Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa’s Conditions and New Directions
U.S. Congressman Marlin Stutzman, following his recent visit to Syria, revealed Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa’s desire to normalize relations with Israel. He pointed out that the new Syrian administration has clear conditions, the most important of which is halting Israeli airstrikes on Syrian territory.
In an interview with the Jerusalem Post, Stutzman stated that President al-Sharaa expressed willingness to join the Abraham Accords, which could lead to normalizing relations with Israel and other countries in the region, including the United States. He added that al-Sharaa emphasized the need to address the Golan Heights issue and end Israeli airstrikes on Syrian territory as a prerequisite for continuing dialogue.
On the other hand, Stutzman described President al-Sharaa as a calm and thoughtful personality, seeking to bring about fundamental changes in Syria after decades of Assad’s rule. He noted that al-Sharaa showed enthusiasm for developing the economy, tourism, enhancing trade, and opening trade routes connecting Syria with regional countries and Europe, which would help reduce transportation time and improve the country’s economic conditions.
