Russian-Chinese veto blocks Bahraini resolution on Strait of Hormuz

Opening of Strait of Hormuz: 11 nations back Bahraini draft resolution.. Russia and China use veto to block it

Russia and China used their veto power at the U.N. Security Council to block a Bahraini draft resolution regarding the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, after 11 members voted in favor while Russia and China opposed, and Pakistan and Colombia abstained.

The Security Council met in the morning New York time to vote on the draft resolution submitted by Bahrain, Jordan, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, which related to what Bahrain described as “Iran’s unjustified control over international navigation.”

The U.S. envoy to the Security Council said that Russia and China, by opposing the draft resolution, had backed a regime that “oppresses its people,” while Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif Al-Zayani, who presides over the Council during April, had affirmed that the draft resolution was consistent with international law and the provisions of the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea.
