Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic! Polisario Reaffirms Commitment to Self-Determination in New York
The representative of the Polisario Front to the United Nations, Sidi Mohamed Omar, stated that the voice of the Sahrawi people has reached the UN Security Council and all global powers. He noted that recent protests and popular positions expressed a strong commitment to self-determination and the defense of independence, emphasizing that the Front will continue its struggle to achieve independence and reclaim sovereignty over the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
Meanwhile, the UN Security Council announced that its members voted on a draft resolution granting Western Sahara autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty, describing the step as potentially the most feasible solution to the conflict that has persisted for nearly 50 years. Eleven countries voted in favor, while Russia, China, and Pakistan abstained, and Algeria did not vote. The resolution also renewed the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force in Western Sahara for one year.
King Mohammed VI of Morocco stated that the country is at a pivotal stage in the Western Sahara issue after fifty years of conflict. He noted that Morocco will present the updated autonomy initiative to the United Nations as the sole basis for negotiation, emphasizing Morocco’s commitment to a conflict resolution that leaves no party dominant and preserves the rights of all involved.
