Pope responds to Trump: I do not fear your administration, Vatican’s call for dialogue and rejection of violence

Pope Leo XIV told the Associated Press aboard the papal plane en route to Africa that putting his message in the same framework as what President Trump tried to do shows a misunderstanding of the Gospel message. He added that he regrets hearing the criticism, affirming that he will continue what he believes is the Church’s message in the world today.

The Pope affirmed that the Holy See’s calls for peace and reconciliation are based on Gospel teachings, and that he does not fear the Trump administration. He stressed that the Vatican’s call for dialogue and rejection of violence is not a passing political position, but an integral part of the spiritual message.

Pope Leo XIV arrived in Algiers on Monday, the first stop on his African tour covering 11 countries. He was received by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Algeria is a symbolic stop due to its historic role in promoting interfaith dialogue in the Mediterranean and Africa.
