Powerful Earthquake Strikes Papua New Guinea’s Coast, No Tsunami Threat Reported

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck the northern coast of Papua New Guinea on Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, raising concerns about its potential impact on nearby areas.

The quake occurred at a depth of 52.7 kilometers and was centered approximately 117 kilometers from the town of Angoram, a region frequently affected by seismic activity due to its location within the Pacific “Ring of Fire”—an area known for its high concentration of volcanoes and earthquakes. While the tremor was felt in some surrounding areas, local authorities have not issued any immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that there is no threat of a tsunami resulting from the earthquake.
