President Joseph Aoun on Independence Day: Ready to Engage in Negotiations Under These Conditions
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun delivered a speech during his visit to southern Lebanon on the occasion of Independence Day, outlining his vision for sovereignty and the role of the state in the coming phase.
President Joseph Aoun stated that his presence in the south comes as part of closely monitoring the situation on the ground, noting that the region has experienced repeated Israeli attacks and security tensions over the years. He emphasized that strengthening state authority and ensuring a unified decision-making process are, in his view, fundamental pillars for understanding independence in the current context.
He pointed out that this is his first Independence Day speech since being elected president, adding that Lebanon’s political and security circumstances require a clear and straightforward approach. Aoun stressed that independence is the result of an extended national effort, paying tribute to those who contributed to this journey over the decades.
Addressing current challenges, the president referred to notable regional and international developments that necessitate a reassessment of Lebanon’s position and institutional role. He reiterated the need to restrict the possession of weapons and decisions of war and peace exclusively to the state, highlighting the importance of public institutions managing national affairs in accordance with established legal frameworks.
Regarding the border situation, President Aoun affirmed that the Lebanese Army is “ready to take control of the border points” in southern Lebanon once hostilities cease and Israeli forces withdraw. He also announced Lebanon’s readiness to present a clear timeline to the international Quintet Committee to facilitate this process. Aoun added that Lebanon is willing to engage in any negotiation track under UN or international sponsorship, provided it aims to reinforce border stability.
He further underscored the need to support the Lebanese Army, rebuild affected areas, and uphold laws related to limiting weapon possession beyond state authority—done in cooperation with relevant Arab and international partners.
President Joseph Aoun concluded his address by affirming that resolving living and security challenges requires strengthening the role of the state and its institutions. He stated that independence remains deeply linked to the Lebanese people’s ability to protect their sovereignty and develop their political and economic system.
