Pyramids Make History with First Major Title
Egypt’s Pyramids FC claimed their first-ever CAF Champions League title in 2025, securing a dramatic 2-1 victory over South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday evening at the Air Defense Stadium in Cairo, in the second leg of the tournament final.
Congolese striker Fiston Mayele opened the scoring for Pyramids in the 23rd minute, followed by a second goal from Ahmed Sami in the 58th. Sundowns responded with a goal by Iqraam Rayners in the 75th minute. The first leg in South Africa had ended in a 1-1 draw, giving Pyramids a 3-2 aggregate win to secure the continental title.

With this historic achievement, Pyramids become the fourth Egyptian club to win the CAF Champions League, following Al Ahly (12 titles), Zamalek (5 titles), and Ismaily (1 title). The total number of Champions League titles for Egyptian clubs now stands at 19, further strengthening Egypt’s status as the most successful nation in the tournament’s history.

Founded in 2008 under the name “Al Assiouty Sport,” the club was renamed Pyramids FC in 2018 following a change in ownership. Since then, it has rapidly risen through the ranks of Egyptian and African football to become a top contender on the continental stage.
