Moscow: Strikes on Iranian Nuclear Sites Threaten Radiation Contamination.. IAEA Called Upon to Clarify Risks
Russia warned of a serious escalation in the Middle East, expressing concern over attacks targeting nuclear facilities in Iran. The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that targeting facilities of a peaceful nature carries grave risks, pointing to the possibility of widespread radiation contamination.
Moscow called for clear international condemnation of the attacks, stating they constitute a violation of international law. It expressed deep concern over the potential for the conflict to turn into an environmental and humanitarian disaster, affirming that any radioactive leak could have severe consequences for public health and the environment in the region and beyond.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to clearly articulate the risks facing nuclear facilities in Iran. She expressed hope that the agency’s director general would be able to deliver a direct message based on objective information from Iranian authorities.
Russia said that states carrying out strikes against peaceful nuclear facilities in Iran are undermining the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and IAEA inspection mechanisms. It added that these states are disregarding internationally agreed-upon resolutions to serve their own interests.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi had previously warned of grave risks following reports of strikes near the Bushehr nuclear power plant in Iran, confirming that any direct targeting could lead to a radiological incident inside and outside the country.
