Baghdad approves “right to respond and self-defense” for Popular Mobilization Forces after targeting of its bases in Anbar and Erbil.. and arrests cell that fired rockets toward Syria
Iraq’s Ministerial Council for National Security held an emergency meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, during which it approved the “principle of the right to respond and self-defense” against military operations targeting PMF bases and armed forces.
Rejecting aggression and pursuing perpetrators
The council reaffirmed its rejection of “aggression and targeting of states’ sovereignty,” stressing that the state alone holds the authority to decide war and peace, and that legal measures will be taken against any party acting outside the law. It also decided to pursue those involved in attacks on security institutions and diplomatic missions.
Complaint to Security Council and summoning ambassadors
The council decided to file a complaint with the UN Security Council through the Foreign Ministry, and to summon the US chargé d’affaires and the Iranian ambassador to hand them an official protest note regarding the attacks that targeted PMF headquarters in Anbar and other areas, as well as the headquarters of the Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga forces in Erbil.
Iraq will not be a launchpad for aggression
In a parallel development, the spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces announced the arrest of four individuals who fired rockets from the Rabia district toward Syrian territory, describing them as “outlaws.” He affirmed that Iraq will not allow itself to be a launchpad for any aggression against any neighboring country.
