Russia and Ukraine Expand Deep-Strike War as 230 Drones Target Russian Territory

Russia and Ukraine are expanding their long-range strike campaigns, with a new wave of drone and missile attacks hitting industrial facilities, ports and logistics sites as Moscow said on Saturday that it had downed 230 Ukrainian drones overnight.

Ukraine’s air force, meanwhile, said it intercepted eight Russian missiles and 102 drones, underscoring how the conflict is increasingly reaching targets far beyond the ground front lines.

Russia Says It Downed 230 Ukrainian Drones

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its air defenses intercepted and destroyed 230 Ukrainian drones over more than 10 Russian regions, as well as over Crimea and the Azov and Black seas.

Russian reports said industrial facilities in the Samara region came under drone attack, while authorities in Belgorod said Ukrainian strikes killed one person and wounded 14 others.

The attacks come as Ukrainian drone attacks inside Russia have expanded in scope, targeting industrial, energy and logistics facilities that Kyiv says support Moscow’s ability to sustain its military operations.

Russia Targets Ukrainian Ports and Industrial Sites

Russia’s Defense Ministry, for its part, said it carried out a large-scale strike using precision weapons and attack drones against facilities across Ukraine.

The ministry said the strikes targeted industrial sites in Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro and Kryvyi Rih, including mining and metals facilities that Moscow said contribute to the production of materials with military applications.

Strikes also hit the Odesa region, where Russia said it targeted port infrastructure and a strategic transport facility used to unload and store military-related cargo.

Russia’s Defense Ministry also said it struck two cargo ships at the Black Sea port of Chornomorsk, claiming they were carrying weapons and military equipment for Ukrainian forces. The details of that claim could not be independently verified.

Casualties Mount as Strikes Expand

The impact was not limited to industrial and logistics facilities. Ukrainian authorities reported deaths and injuries from Russian strikes in several regions, including Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk, while other areas reported damage from the attacks.

Russian authorities also reported casualties and damage in regions targeted by Ukraine, as both sides continue to use long-range drones to reach targets far from the battlefield.

Russia and Ukraine Expand the Deep-Strike War

Saturday’s attacks highlight an increasingly prominent feature of the Russia-Ukraine war: strikes against infrastructure that helps sustain military operations, from energy and fuel facilities to factories, ports, transport networks and logistics hubs.

Energy and transport infrastructure have become increasingly important targets because of their links to supply lines, economic activity and the ability to sustain military operations. That has placed energy security and strategic infrastructure increasingly at the center of the wider conflict.

The escalation comes as recent ground developments have yet to produce a decisive shift in the course of the war, increasing the significance of each side’s ability to strike deeper into the other’s territory and hit facilities linked to production, supply and transportation.

Putin Warns Europe Over Troop Deployment

Alongside the battlefield escalation, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a stark warning to Europe, saying the deployment of European troops to Ukraine would mean those countries entering a war with Russia.

The warning comes as Kyiv’s allies discuss possible security guarantees for Ukraine, while Moscow continues to reject the presence of Western forces on Ukrainian territory.

As strikes increasingly extend beyond the front lines to factories, ports, energy facilities and logistics networks, the deep-strike campaign is becoming a more prominent part of the war, with both sides seeking to weaken the other’s ability to produce military supplies, maintain logistics and sustain operations.
