SDF Signals Openness to Ankara, Conditional Agreement with Damascus, and Denial of Ties with Israel

Mazloum Abdi, the Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), stated that his forces are engaged in direct communication with Turkey, expressing openness to improving relations, including the possibility of a future meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Abdi explained that discussions are taking place both directly and through intermediaries, noting that the current ceasefire — which has halted clashes over the past two months — may pave the way for broader understandings. The ceasefire was established in December through U.S. mediation following clashes that erupted after the fall of the former Syrian regime.

SDF’s Integration into Syrian Army Tied to Decentralization, May Take Years

Regarding relations with Damascus, Abdi emphasized that the integration of SDF forces into the Syrian military is a complex process that could take several years. He stressed that any integration must occur within a comprehensive political framework that recognizes decentralization and the rights of the communities in northeastern Syria.

He added that the SDF rejects superficial or temporary solutions and seeks a model that guarantees its continued role as an organized force within a nationally agreed-upon structure. Abdi also announced the formation of a joint negotiation delegation, comprising members of the Kurdish National Council and the Autonomous Administration, to begin formal dialogue with the Syrian government.

SDF Denies Israel Ties; Damascus Reportedly Accepted Normalization

Abdi categorically denied allegations that the SDF maintains any form of relationship with Israel, stating that such claims lack evidence. He noted that “normalization with Israel was among the conditions set by the United States and accepted by Damascus,” according to his remarks.

A political agreement signed in March between the SDF and the Syrian government outlined the integration of all institutions operated by the Autonomous Administration — including border crossings, airports, and oil and gas fields — into the framework of the Syrian state.
