September 18 Daily Report: Hormuz Tanker, 60 Million Barrels and Trump’s Media Ban

September 18 daily report coverage was led by renewed disruption in the Strait of Hormuz and global energy markets, after Iran said it struck a Togo-flagged oil tanker while Saudi Arabia moved to sustain crude exports through arrangements involving about 60 million barrels and ship-to-ship transfers near Oman.
In Washington, President Donald Trump opened a new confrontation with major U.S. news organizations by announcing restrictions on CNN, MS NOW and Politico. The day also brought a deadly mosque attack in Pakistan, a direct Lebanese-Israeli military standoff in southern Lebanon, an expanding humanitarian crisis in Yemen and another escalation in the Russia-Ukraine air war.
September 18 daily report: Hormuz Tanker Raises Shipping Risks
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it struck the Togo-flagged tanker Trend, alleging that the vessel had attempted what Tehran described as an illegal passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
Separately, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency said a tanker was hit by an unidentified projectile, causing a fire that was later extinguished. UKMTO said the crew was safe but did not establish that its report concerned the same vessel identified by Iran.
Profile News covered the incident in detail in its report on the Trend tanker and renewed security risks in the Strait of Hormuz.
Commercial traffic remained unusually low. Kpler data cited by Reuters showed only four commodity vessels crossed the strait on Thursday, down from six a day earlier. U.S. Central Command meanwhile said it had redirected 105 commercial vessels since Washington resumed its maritime blockade of Iran.
Saudi Aramco Turns to Oman for About 60 Million Barrels
Trade sources told Reuters that Saudi Arabia had sold about 60 million barrels of crude from Ras Tanura for September and October loading through ship-to-ship transfers near Sohar, Oman.
The arrangements are intended to help offset reduced exports from the Red Sea port of Yanbu following damage to the kingdom’s East-West pipeline.
Saudi Aramco’s Gulf exports recovered to roughly 1 million to 1.5 million barrels per day, with buyers including refiners in China, South Korea, India and Japan.
Profile News reported on Aramco’s 60-million-barrel export strategy through Oman.
Trump Announces Restrictions on CNN, Politico and MS NOW
Trump said CNN, MS NOW and Politico were being barred from the White House over coverage he described as fake news and said other organizations could face similar action.
The immediate scope and implementation of the announcement remained unclear, with journalists from the three outlets continuing to work at the White House after it was made.
CNN and Politico said they would defend their journalists’ First Amendment rights, adding a legal dimension to the dispute over White House press access.
Profile News examined the issue in its report on Trump’s White House media announcement and the legal questions surrounding it.
Trump Says Iran Still Wants a Deal
Trump told NewsNation that Iran wanted an agreement with the United States but said he would reject any deal he considered inadequate.
He also repeated that Iran would not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon and said he expected the war to end soon, although no diplomatic breakthrough had been publicly announced.
The comments came amid continuing pressure on Iranian shipping and one day after Russia and China vetoed a U.S.-backed measure related to sanctions monitoring, covered by Profile News in its report on the Russia-China veto and Iran sanctions dispute.
At Least 21 Killed in Pakistan Mosque Attack
A vehicle packed with explosives struck a mosque inside a police compound in Kohat, northwestern Pakistan, as armed attackers attempted to enter the complex.
Police and rescue officials cited by the Associated Press said at least 21 people were killed and about 80 wounded, including police officers attending prayers. Later media reports cited higher tolls as casualty figures continued to be updated.
Profile News has the full report on the Kohat mosque bombing and armed assault.
Southern Lebanon: Deir Mimas Standoff and Meiss El Jabal Hospital
The Lebanese Army said an Israeli force approached one of its positions near Deir Mimas and threw stun grenades in the area before withdrawing following military coordination contacts.
Israel’s military told the Associated Press that Lebanese troops had entered what Israel describes as a security zone and erected roadblocks without prior coordination. A Lebanese security official disputed that characterization and said the soldiers were accompanying residents seeking access to agricultural land.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry separately accused Israeli forces of setting fire to the government hospital in Meiss El Jabal. No specific Israeli response to that allegation had been located by the time of reporting.
According to field information obtained by Profile News, September 18 also saw an airstrike in Mansouri, artillery fire across 11 locations and explosions in Meiss El Jabal, Khiam, Mansouri, al-Bayyada and the area between Baraachit and Kounine.
Yemen Crisis Deepens as Maritime Coalition Moves Toward Operations
Saudi Arabia’s Defense Ministry said representatives of 41 countries attended the fourth planning meeting of the multinational maritime defense coalition in Jeddah and that the initiative had reached initial operational capability.
The United Nations meanwhile said more than 22 million people in Yemen now require humanitarian assistance as renewed fighting drives further displacement.
Trump also said the United States was talking to the Houthis and that the group was interested in exploring a possible agreement. Profile News previously reported on U.S.-Houthi contacts in Oman and maritime security.
Russia-Ukraine Air War Escalates Again
Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched 93 drones and loitering munitions overnight, with Ukrainian defenses reporting that 72 were intercepted or disrupted.
Russian authorities meanwhile reported a large Ukrainian drone campaign, including dozens of aircraft approaching Moscow.
Kyiv came under a Russian missile attack later Friday, while Ukrainian officials said two strikes in central Odesa wounded 10 people. President Vladimir Putin separately claimed that Russian weapons and ammunition production and deliveries had increased more than 22-fold since the start of the war, although he did not provide detailed figures allowing independent comparison.
Profile News has followed the broader escalation in the expanding Russia-Ukraine drone war.
Hormuz Remains the Connecting Thread
Across the day’s major developments, energy and maritime security remained a common thread: tanker incidents in Hormuz, reduced commercial traffic, Saudi efforts to reroute crude exports, U.S. pressure on Iran and rising concern about the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb.
