Shocking European Report: Russian Gas Imports Rise Despite Sanctions

A report by the research center Ember revealed that the European Union’s imports of Russian natural gas—both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and pipeline gas—rose by 18% in 2024 compared to the previous year, despite the EU sanctions imposed on Russia due to the war in Ukraine.

The report highlighted that Italy, France, and the Czech Republic were among several countries that increased their Russian gas imports last year. It also noted that some European nations have not fully adhered to the EU’s plan to eliminate reliance on Russian gas by 2027. However, the report pointed out that this commitment is not legally binding, meaning it may not be enforced.

Furthermore, the report predicted that Russian gas imports to Europe will continue to rise in 2025, despite stagnant demand within the EU. It also noted a 60% increase in gas prices in 2024.

Since 2022, European countries have imposed sanctions on Russian energy exports, including oil, coal, and gas.
