Skin Cancer Signs: 3 Skin Symptoms You Should Never Ignore

Dermatology experts warn that seemingly harmless marks on your skin may actually be early signs of skin cancer—even if they appear benign at first glance.

Persistent Pimples? A Warning Sign of Skin Cancer

Dr. Daniel Sugai, a Harvard-trained dermatologist based in Seattle, revealed that a pimple on the face or body lasting more than four weeks could be one of the key skin cancer signs that shouldn’t be overlooked.

In a video shared on his popular TikTok account, Dr. Sugai stated: “If you notice a pimple that doesn’t go away within a month, don’t hesitate to see a dermatologist immediately.”

Recurring Blood Spots? Another Symptom to Watch For

Dr. Sugai also pointed to small, continuously bleeding blood spots as another symptom that deserves attention. “Many patients tell me they notice a bloody spot after washing their face, and it keeps bleeding and peeling over and over again,” he said.

These symptoms, he explained, are often associated with basal cell carcinoma (BCC)—the most common type of skin cancer in the United States, with an estimated 3.6 million cases diagnosed annually, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.

What Is Basal Cell Carcinoma?

Basal cell carcinoma begins in the basal cells—the bottom layer of the skin’s epidermis responsible for generating new skin cells. It typically appears on sun-exposed areas such as the face and neck.

According to the Mayo Clinic, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun is the leading cause of this form of cancer. Dr. Sugai noted: “Sunburns in childhood can have lasting impacts on your DNA, increasing your risk of skin cancer later in life.”

When to See a Dermatologist

If you notice any of the following symptoms, they could be signs of skin cancer and warrant immediate medical evaluation:

  1. Pimples that don’t go away after 4 weeks
  2. Bloody spots that appear frequently after washing your face or light contact
  3. Wounds that don’t heal and bleed easily

Early detection is crucial for effective treatment, so don’t ignore these simple yet potentially serious skin changes.
