Avoiding a Biological Disaster… Egypt Thwarts Smuggling of Over 300 Rare and Endangered Live Creatures
Cairo Airport Customs thwarted a smuggling attempt involving more than 300 rare and endangered live creatures, including venomous scorpions and dangerous snakes. The operation was coordinated between the General Authority for Veterinary Services and security agencies to prevent a potential biological and environmental disaster threatening Egypt’s biosecurity.
The seized shipment included 40 Vietnamese scorpions, 5 highly venomous Brazilian yellow scorpions, 65 snakes such as spitting cobras and Burmese pythons, along with 199 other creatures internationally banned from trade. The attempt was uncovered when a foreign passenger tried to bring these creatures into the country without official permits.

The creatures involved in the smuggling pose health risks due to the potential transmission of unknown local diseases, viruses, and bacteria, and they threaten Egypt’s ecological balance and biodiversity. Furthermore, they could negatively impact livestock and food security. Monitoring these creatures and protecting the national environment is a top priority for authorities who have launched investigations to examine the details of the case.
