South Lebanon: Lebanese Army Targeted, Response Orders Issued, Concerns Over Beirut Airport
The Lebanese Army Command reported that the area around one of its observation posts on the southern border in Surdeh – Marjeyoun was targeted by Israeli gunfire, coinciding with the flight of a drone and audio warnings aimed at forcing personnel to withdraw.
The Command clarified that these developments occurred amid ongoing tensions along the southern border, without reporting any casualties.
Response Orders
The Lebanese Army confirmed that the command issued immediate orders to reinforce the military post, remain in position, and respond to the sources of fire based on field assessments.
It also noted that the situation was being monitored in coordination with the Supervisory Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), as part of efforts to contain any escalation along the border.
Concerns Over Beirut Airport
In a related development, Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raji stated that there were indications Israel could strike Beirut International Airport, expressing concern over potential Israeli strikes in the event of heightened tensions between Israel and Iran.
He added that the Lebanese government follows a policy based on reclaiming territory, asserting state sovereignty, and maintaining control over arms within the state.
Israeli Warning and Contradictions
Reuters reported that senior Lebanese officials said Israel sent an indirect message warning that it could target the country strongly, including civilian infrastructure, if Hezbollah intervened in any potential U.S.–Iran confrontation.
In the same context, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam expressed concern over contradictory statements from Hezbollah regarding its stance on any regional escalation, emphasizing that the government has no influence over U.S.–Iran relations and urging the avoidance of actions that could lead to further repercussions for Lebanon.
