The Southern Transitional Council dissolves itself ahead of participation in the Riyadh Conference

The Southern Transitional Council in Yemen announced the dissolution of itself along with all its main and subsidiary bodies, and the closure of its offices inside and outside the country, according to a recorded statement broadcast by Yemen’s government television. The statement was read by the Council’s Secretary-General, Ahmed Saeed Bin Breik, before the dissolution, who confirmed that the decision aims to pursue what he described as the “just southern goal” by preparing for participation in the Comprehensive Southern Dialogue Conference, set to be held under the auspices of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The statement explained that the decision followed recent developments in Hadhramaut and Al Mahrah governorates, in preparation for participation in the Southern Dialogue Conference called by Saudi Arabia in Riyadh. On January 3, the Kingdom invited all southern factions to participate in the conference, which aims to develop a comprehensive plan for solutions related to the southern issue, following a request by the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, to host the event.

Bin Breik pointed out that the Council did not participate in the decision regarding the military operation in Hadhramaut and Al Mahrah, considering that these developments affected southern unity and relations with the Saudi-led coalition. He added that the continued existence of the Council, according to the statement, no longer serves its founding objective, calling on southern figures and leaders to engage in the Comprehensive Southern Dialogue process, while noting the Council’s appreciation for Saudi Arabia’s declared role and commitments to reach solutions that meet the aspirations of the southern population.
