Statements by the Suwayda Governor Regarding the Recent Agreement
Suwayda Governor Mustafa Bakour stated to Syria TV that the agreement reached in the governorate was an initiative by the local residents, Druze religious leaders, and community dignitaries aimed at enhancing security.
He emphasized that talk of foreign support is upsetting to the people of Suwayda, stressing that the issued statement reaffirmed their allegiance to Syria.
The governor also explained that several young men from Suwayda had joined the General Security in order to activate it in the area, noting that the local military council had opposed the agreement.
He pointed out that 90% of Suwayda’s residents consider Damascus their reference, except for a few individuals who do not, without convincing reasons.
He added that the spiritual leader of the Druze community in Syria, Hikmat al-Hijri, was present during the agreement, and that the statement issued was agreed upon by all attendees. He further explained that he discussed with al-Hijri the matter of local residents assuming security responsibilities in Suwayda.
Regarding the security situation, the governor confirmed that there is no need for General Security convoys to enter Suwayda unless state institutions come under threat. He stressed that the lack of security stability in the governorate could undermine public safety.
He also confirmed that some violations in the Suwayda countryside had been dealt with, indicating that the spread of weapons does not contribute to the enhancement of security and stability in Syria.
He stressed that there is no justification for civilians to possess heavy or medium weaponry, asserting that such weapons should be exclusively held by the state.
He explained that anyone carrying a light weapon should either obtain a license or operate under the umbrella of the Ministry of Defense or General Security. He also mentioned that Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara and the Minister of Interior are closely following developments in the Suwayda file.
