The local authorities in Switzerland
announced that hundreds of British tourists, who were forced into quarantine, fled from the Swiss ski resort “Verbier” for fear of spending their holidays inside the quarantine headquarters.
Local media confirmed that between 200 and 420 British tourists escaped from the luxury ski station in the Alps under cover of darkness.
In a statement, Jean-Marc Sandoz, a spokesman for Bagen municipality, said: “Many tourists stayed in quarantine for a day before they set out unnoticed under cover of darkness.”
He described the whole situation as “the worst week our society has ever seen.”
British tourists often make up 21% of Verbier’s guests, and most of them start pouring in soon after Christmas.
