Syrian-Russian Relations: Strengthening Military, Technical Cooperation, and Security

Syrian Foreign Minister, Assad al-Shibani, stated that Syrian-Russian relations are entering a “new era,” noting that this year marks the beginning of the country’s exit from a 14-year conflict. The remarks were made during a meeting in Moscow with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, where al-Shibani emphasized the importance of attracting foreign investments and expressed hope for Russian support in this regard. He also highlighted that Syria had successfully halted drug trafficking that occurred under the previous regime.

Al-Shibani arrived in Moscow yesterday, accompanied by Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra and intelligence officials, holding a series of meetings with Russian authorities, including a session with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The discussions focused on strengthening military and technical partnerships, transferring technical expertise, and cooperating in research and development to enhance the Syrian army’s defense capabilities and support security and stability in Syria and the region.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, noting the coordination of the two countries’ positions on international platforms and the development of this cooperation. Lavrov added that al-Shibani’s meeting with President Putin addressed bilateral issues and regional developments, highlighting Syria’s readiness to deepen cooperation with Russia.

This visit follows Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharrah’s trip to Moscow in October, during which al-Shibani, Abu Qasra, and Secretary-General of the Presidency Maher al-Sharrah accompanied him.
