According to reports from the Associated Press and Reuters, U.S. officials stated that the State Department is preparing to order the departure of non-essential personnel from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. The decision is reportedly based on a security assessment of the situation in Iraq and the broader region. Additionally, voluntary departure has been authorized for non-essential staff and their families from U.S. diplomatic missions in Bahrain and Kuwait.
In parallel, officials from the U.S. Department of Defense confirmed that the Pentagon and U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) are on standby to support potential evacuation operations from Baghdad. They emphasized that the safety and security of U.S. military personnel and their families remain a top priority for the defense establishment.
A State Department source indicated that these measures are part of an ongoing review of regional security conditions, conducted in coordination with allied partners. The United States aims to maintain its operational readiness in the region while minimizing risks to diplomatic and military personnel.
Meanwhile, Iran’s mission to the United Nations issued a statement asserting that Tehran does not seek to acquire nuclear weapons, and that U.S. military policies in the region contribute to instability. The statement called for diplomatic approaches rather than military solutions.
The White House confirmed that the U.S. President is closely monitoring the evolving security landscape and remains committed to ensuring the safety of American citizens abroad. Embassy staffing levels, it said, are subject to continuous evaluation in line with leadership guidance.
Coinciding with these developments, oil prices recorded a 5% increase, while the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) advised vessels to exercise caution when transiting the Arabian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz due to heightened regional tensions.
