Turkey Arrests Swedish Journalist on Charges of Insulting Erdoğan
Turkish authorities have arrested a Swedish journalist on charges of terrorism and insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The Turkish presidency announced the arrest of journalist Joachim Medin, stating that he had insulted the President of Turkey and was accused of belonging to a terrorist organization banned in the country.
According to a statement from Turkey’s Media Disinformation Center on Sunday, the detained Swedish journalist allegedly acted as a liaison between the media and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The center emphasized that his arrest was unrelated to his journalistic activities.
The statement also noted that Medin was among 15 suspects who participated in a PKK event in Stockholm on January 11, 2023, where a puppet representing Erdoğan was used.
On Friday, the editor-in-chief of Dagens ETC newspaper stated that a Swedish journalist had been detained upon arriving in Istanbul to cover events in the country, according to Sweden’s SVT television.
Meanwhile, Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard confirmed that her government was aware of the journalist’s arrest.
