UN High Commissioner for Human Rights warns of Israel’s control over the West Bank

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights: Two-State Solution is the Basis for a Sustainable Settlement in the Middle East

Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, stated that Israel is moving to strengthen its control over Palestinian territories through new decisions described as “consolidating unlawful annexation” of the West Bank.

Türk emphasized that any sustainable settlement in the region can only be achieved through a two-state solution, establishing an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel in accordance with international law and UN resolutions. He noted that current Israeli measures affect the Palestinians’ right to self-determination.

Türk added that the continuation of these policies is increasing tensions in the West Bank, which has experienced heightened field activities in recent months, including extensive military operations and arrests in areas ranging from Jenin and Tulkarem in the north to Hebron in the south. Reports indicated that these operations resulted in casualties, including a child, and over a hundred injuries, alongside temporary displacement of families due to rising violence in rural areas.

Since late 2025, Israel has continued implementing decisions to expand population centers in the West Bank, focusing on specific geographic areas. The United Nations has warned that these measures may affect the possibility of establishing a geographically contiguous Palestinian state. Reports indicate that military operations and geographic expansions are proceeding simultaneously, under ongoing international monitoring.
