UN Warns Tripoli Unrest May Spiral; Calls for Urgent Humanitarian Truce
Local sources reported the outbreak of violent clashes in several areas of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, including Janzour, Al-Riqata village, the “Disabled Bridge,” Ghiran, and the vicinity of Al-Nakheel village. The escalation has fueled growing concern among civilians, who are now calling for the establishment of safe humanitarian corridors to allow them to escape the conflict zones, according to a report by RT.
A source from the Ministry of Defense under the Government of National Unity stated that a “gradual truce” had begun taking effect in certain flashpoints, in an effort to contain the deteriorating security situation.
Meanwhile, the Ambulance and Emergency Service urged all warring factions to declare an immediate ceasefire and open safe passages without delay. The agency emphasized the urgent need to respond to citizens’ pleas, especially in areas under heavy fire.
It also noted that Al-Jalaa Children’s Hospital is facing access difficulties due to the clashes, with several medical cases requiring urgent evacuation. There is also a pressing need to relieve exhausted medical staff, who have been operating without interruption since the violence erupted.
Regional and International Reactions
On the regional level, EgyptAir announced the cancellation of its scheduled Wednesday flight from Cairo International Airport to Mitiga International Airport in Tripoli, citing the volatile security situation. It is the first airline to suspend operations on this route since the resurgence of unrest.
Internationally, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) condemned the rapid military escalation in Tripoli and the mobilization of armed forces in other regions, warning that the situation could spiral out of control.
The mission expressed deep concern over reports of civilian casualties and reiterated its call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire across all affected areas to enable the evacuation of civilians trapped in conflict zones.
UNSMIL further urged all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law, protect civilian lives, and engage in serious, good-faith dialogue to resolve disputes peacefully. The mission confirmed that it remains in contact with the relevant parties and international partners to help contain the crisis.
